The House roads subcommittee advanced authorization for a 27 billion dollar super-highway system to span 40,000 miles, cross 24 states, and connect 90 percent of U S cities with 30,000 plus population. Federal funding would total 20 5 billion, with states covering the remainder.
Telephone surveyors in the Hayward area falsely claim district ties to pre school and school age children. Supt. Jack Rees says the district has not authorized such surveys and warns parents to refuse disclosure and require identification from callers.
For the second straight night five Heyward City council candidates will face the voters in an open forum at Schafer school 25660 Flamingo avenue. The Eden Citizens committee will hold the forum at eight oclock, giving each candidate ten minutes to present their platform and answer questions. The public is invited.

Hayward gears up for a Saturday street dance on Main Street as part of the 80th birthday celebration. SACRAMENTO an aqueduct could be built in five years to serve Southern Alameda Santa Clara and San Benito counties. The Assembly Ways and Means committee approved 3 1 000 for engineering studies and site purchases from the San Joaquin delta. Bruce F Allen San Jose assemblyman said total cost would be about 60 million dollars with studies starting in 1958. The amendment would fund reservoir site acquisitions once routes are determined. The panel favored immediate start on the Feather River project and approved 5.6 million to acquire Oroville dam site and San Luis reservoir site. Seven Southern California members opposed Gov Knight's plan to delay San Luis site funding.

Maj. John A. Fowler and Capt. Earl P. Kelley survived a C-47 crash on Mt Fuji. They spent three days at a Japanese weather station atop Fujiyama and were evacuated by a rescue team braving a blizzard. Fowler lost a tooth. Kelley suffered a bruised face. The pilots praised the food and care provided by Japanese weather personnel.
Fred Hansen, a 40-year-old truck driver, sparked police attention with repeated false reports of murders in hotel rooms and a drowning near the ferry landing. Police traced the same man behind multiple hoaxes, including a sea serpent sighting, leading to mounting concern and a quick identification by a detective.
Nikki Chapman, 10, daughter of Mr and Mrs Beryle Chapman, was struck midair while jumping from a railroad trestle onto Sutterville road to hurry to catechism class. The girl was hurled about 60 feet and injured critically as a car rounded a blind turn. Police said she jumped from a concrete abutment and was struck on the pavement.
