Timber firms go on trial in Portland anti trust case
Trial began in US District Court Monday in the government case against six timber companies and four officers charged with violating antitrust laws. The government alleges the firms conspired in the late 1960s to allocate Forest Service timber in the Detroit Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest by not bidding against each other and by bid inflation when outsiders sought timber. Defense argues the alleged practices reflect common northwest timber industry conduct and that bid levels fell due to a 1966 housing and lumber price slump.
