Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls charm shoppers in 1918 origins
A reader recounts the enduring appeal of Raggedy Ann and Andy, created by John Gruelle from a doll and stories told to his daughter Marcella. The dolls grew into a national icon with some 49 books by Gruelle, while a 1976 movie and Bicentennial themes loom in the background. The piece also covers Hayward California quilting enthusiasts planning their annual show with over 200 entries and a 1976 Bicentennial year exhibit, plus a party honoring Arthur and Lydia Lamb on their 48th anniversary centuries of local history.
