A presidential commission report documents CIA domestic spying and mail opening on thousands of Americans. It cites pressure from Johnson and Kennedy era leaders, notes spied-on employees, and says most improper activities were past by the 1970s. The five month inquiry included 2,500 pages of testimony.
Castro Valley School trustees voted 4 to 1 to close Redwood Elementary in the fall amid financial troubles and a plan for a district wide reorganization. The meeting drew about 150 residents and teachers applauding the action, with dissent from Trustee Paul Rhodes who urged immediate closure of other schools.
Dr. Daniel Cappon of York University told a symposium that subconscious fear or rejection of sex can drive overeating in some people while anorexia nervosa arises from a child like confusion about pregnancy. San Lorenzo Community Center Park in Hayward faces complaints from about six residents who say youths and trespassers arrive at sunset to drink beer and wine, smoke marijuana and PCP, causing vandalism and theft. They allege limited security patrols and ongoing nuisance along Via Buena Vista and surrounding streets.

In Columbia penitentiary guards stormed the vault freeing hostages after an abortive escape bid. Fifteen hostages all prison employees were held. One woman, Mary Steinhauser, was stabbed and died. Two inmates were wounded, one seriously, as authorities ended the standoff.
