Federal plans secure Camp Parks land for youth facility

Pleasanton officials report Fred Dickson of the U S Justice Department outlined a proposal to use about 50 acres at Camp Parks for a 3 million youth rehabilitation center. The facility would house roughly 178 youths aged 1 to 21, focus on first time offenders, avoid major crimes, and aim to divert youths from prison. Other West Coast locations including Los Angeles and Seattle are also being explored.

GM plant delays recall due to union strike at SP railroad

General Motors announces recall delays at its Fremont plant as the United Transportation Union strike against Southern Pacific halts production. About 1,100 assembly workers for trucks and 1,200 for passenger cars face phased returns after the strike ends. Separately in San Leandro, vandalism at Melford Station caused damage estimated between $6,900 and $15,000, with fires set and windows broken before being subdued.

Robbers hold bank hostages in Broadway shootout

New York police battled five robbers who held 12 hostages at the Bankers Trust Co. branch on Broadway and 4th Street. One gunman was killed, three captured. a bystander and one captured robber were wounded as patrol cars raced to the scene. Authorities said a second escaping robber may have been shot.

Arab citizen slaying after anti American remarks at store

Abdu Mushiny Gallegi, an Arab man and U.S. citizen hopeful, was fatally shot after an argument with a customer at a Birmingham grocery. The assailant, Carolina Solis, 07, allegedly cursed Americans in English and Spanish before the murder. Solis was arrested on a second-degree murder charge as Gallegi died Wednesday at Deb ta General Hospital.
