Weather notes forecast near record low temperatures for February start with a 2 degree drop tonight. Hayward’s official minimum reached 21 degrees, with past days dipping to 20s and 27s. Oregon reports deep January cold, snow drifts, and lingering icicles as students contend with winter conditions.
David Allen William Sullivan and Carroll Rogers win director posts at the San Lorenzo Village Homes Association annual meeting held at 7:40 tonight in the Community Center on Paseo. About 503 of 2,391 eligible voters cast ballots, with 21 percent turnout. results to be canvassed by the incumbent board.
Mid year commencement programs and promotion events at five schools in the Hayward district were planned this week. One hundred eight Bret Harte pupils will receive diplomas at graduation Thursday evening February 3. A California Centennial pageant will precede the formal graduation with scenes of California’s history presented by many graduates. Attendance is by invitation only and seating is limited.
Heavy rains caused a rock and dirt slide at the first railroad trestle in Niles Canyon closing the Niles Sunol road near the west end. Patrols and sheriff's deputies redirected traffic while crews cleared the lip of the slide. One lane opened enough for trucks, with work continuing to reopen both lanes within hours. No injuries reported.
A six year old Castey Vallby boy, Gaynor Hudson, was struck by a car on Etobrielee Avenue near Lake Chaint Road yesterday morning. He suffered leg injuries and possible shin fracture, and was taken for X rays. The driver, Bomis K. Pennington, 34, of Strobridge Avenue, said he was traveling about one mile per hour when the child darted from a creek. The incident remains under investigation.

Eighth graders from Ashland and Martin Schools will receive diplomas Thursday at 2 p.m. The program lists a long lineup of speakers, musical numbers, class gifts, and solos led by class officers Darryl Peterson and Joan Castello. Notable names include Narcisa Garcia, Jo Ann Gatti, and Joan Castello with staff oversight by Superintendent Paul D. Brber, continuing on page two.
Dorothy Warenskjold headlined the Hayward Community Concert series at Hayward Union High School, delivering five encores and a warm, sensitive performance. She offered interpretive explanations due to a program mix-up, aided by accompanist Mildred Stombs.
K K Kencherian named manager of Pacific Tel and Tel Hayward exchange by L T Marshall district manager. He replaces W W Cole who moves to San Francisco headquarters after leading Hayward since May 1940. Kencherian rose from clerk in San Francisco general office to South San Francisco exchange manager, with prior posts in San Jose Berkeley Palo Alto San Luis Obispo Watsonville and more. He is married with a young daughter and will relocate his family to Hayward when housing available.
Funeral services were held in Niles for 9 year old Niles girl Nola Jean Miller who was killed when her brother Meads discharged a 22 caliber rifle while attempting to remove a cartridge from the magazine. Survivors include a mother Mrs Oln B Miller and six siblings. Also reported is installation of new Hayward high school Christian Fellowship officers Ray Mutherd president and Donald Hinges vice president with new members to be initiated.
Castro Valley elementary district prepares for the eighth grade graduation with 41 students completing the program. A program of solos, the Magnolia play, and a class gift will highlight the ceremony in the school auditorium Thursday evening. County Superintendent Vaughn Seidel will be introduced as principal speaker, while junior traffic patrol awards and diplomas are presented.
A truck linked to a death by own action was found in a Telegraph Avenue parking lot in Oakland yesterday. F A Stevens of Oakland reported spotting the vehicle, and police confirmed it was removed from the wanted list.
Rail shares sagged today to give the stock market an irregular appearance in an active session. Traders focused on special issues and groups not active recently. Leading industrials held fairly, with top steels near highs for over a year. U. S. Steel directors met after the close to release the 1849 earnings statement and consider dividends. Earnings are expected to set a new 20 year high.
President Truman ordered the Atomic Energy Commission to continue work on all forms of atomic weapons, including the hydrogen bomb, and to pursue a plan for international control of atomic energy. The directive followed a recent AEC report indicating ongoing hydrogen bomb development at Los Alamos, Argonne, Berkeley, and other facilities. The move aims to ensure national defense while seeking peaceful security.
An unidentified man suspected of attempted improper advances on a 12 year old girl was picked up by sheriff's deputies and held as investigators continued questions and an alibi evaluation. The girl was saved when her brother used a hammer to drive the man away from the home.
Nayward Community Theater presents Only An Orphan for one night at Veterans Memorial Building. Gerald Irving announces proceeds go to Children's Hospital of the Fast Hay area to help cover medical and hospital expenses for local children. Tivory cent of funds aid the hospital in this charitable effort.
