Directors discussed a plan to consolidate Oro Loma and Valley Sanitary Districts as a logical solution to reduce operating costs and share the treatment plant. While Worthley and others supported the merger, Armstrong urged resident approval via election and warned against bypassing local will.
The Hayward area chamber of commerce reviewed past achievements at a annual dinner led by Manager Anderson. The program outlined a 1950 slate of officers and praised community cooperation with safety, planning, and development groups, plus promotions for local business and events.
Oro Loma district board last night set a $60 connection charge to the sewage system for the new General Foods plant, plus $3 per toilet, same as local homeowners. Directors noted the plant does not plan industrial waste requiring special handling, so industrial charges would be higher if needed. The panel rejected a $160 proposal from Al Winter, superintendent of construction. Mrs Glen Bailey hosted Dr and Mrs Marla Howard of Eugene Oregon with relatives for the weekend.

Chief Engineer O E Anderson cited San Lorenzen Creek flood history and past obstruction concerns as factors. The commission asked subj subdivisions for reactions before approving the site, with DeBernardi proposing the motion for approval.
The Alameda County planning commission denied an application for a $150,000 drive-in theater between Center and Marshall streets in Castro Valley. Residents protested with a 124-signature petition. highway officials warned against congestion and urged better site design and traffic dispersion. Fred Melhnann, planning commissioner, moved for denial citing a largely residential district and a duty to protect residents.
Hayward resident Nels Nelsen was cleared this week of a wartime housing bribery scheme. He pled guilty to offering a bribe to obtain contracts on mobile labor camp housing projects, served four months of a six month sentence, and his probation was completed leading to restoration of his civil rights.
San Lorenzo Legion Post 676 prepares for a landmark night as the auxiliary is instituted and the post receives its permanent charter on January 31. About 50 members to be initiated, with Margaret Burkhart leading the district ceremony. A chicken dinner, $50 grant, and bond-issues support mark the event alongside post officers and charter members.
Sean Lorenzo Village Volunteer Fire department begins a five week training series tonight at 7 at the fire station on Paseo Grande. Chief Tom Ducey says Carl Kistle of the state department of education will supervise the first aid and resuscitation course with all brigade members eligible for instruction in fist aid and inhaler resuscitation methods.
Ray Barneson and Clarence Wilson led an Oak Knoll Hospital effort as veterans unable to leave wards were entertained by the Vets Area Sportsmen. The program featured movies on fly tying and fishing gear displays, with plans for weekly sports nights in 1950 and support from multiple clubs including Castro Valley, Hayward, and Berkeley Rod and Gun groups.
A Pacific Gas and Electric insulator failure caused a regional blackout at 7:05 p.m. affecting San Lorenzo Village and most of Hayward. With rain grounding a cracked insulator on Beckman road, thousands lost power across three substations. Hayward Hospital, Bret Harte School, the Lorenzo Theatre and nearby facilities darkened as crews investigated. Nurses used candles. Bret Harte basketball games were canceled.

Edward J Morris Davilla 35 of 984 V street Alvarade was shot behind the bar in a Beay Cat cafe robbery in Centerville about 6 05 a m yesterday. A vault cash haul of 600 plus 200 in bar pockets vanished as a knife blade fragment lay near the safe. Davilla's wife Mary phoned Dutra to report he had not returned from work. Witnesses named Howard Cook and Floyd Cook as persons of interest while Floyd's parole status and a cousin Ray Dugger provided alibi checks. Police pressed for interviews as Floyd Cook remains sought on a murder-knife charge and concealed weapons case.
