In a blinding snowstorm a six car Danvers local crashed into the rear of a Boston bound Portland train at Swampscott junction. Nine bodies were found and officials feared more. Dozens injured and transported to area hospitals as another collision involving two more B M trains followed in Revere. An eyewitness account described the Danvers train car telescoping and gaping like a watermelon.
