Four men injured in two highway fires rescue
A cigarette in bed nearly caused a fatal blaze as John W. Ashley, 63, was rescued by neighbors Frank Mihle, 33, and Paul Chapin, 45 after smoke was seen at 101 Valle Vista. Ashley sustained second and third degree burns and was moved from Fairmont to Highland hospital in Oakland in serious condition.

Sailors Hurt In Pergola Hill Crash
Two Navy sailors were injured when their light car rear-ended a slower moving truck on the west slope of Pergola hill near Castro Valley. Hubert Hancock and Larry Leslie, both of the Naval Annex in Stockton, were treated at Fairmont hospital and later at Oak Knoll hospital. The truck driver, George Freitas, reported traveling 10 to 12 mph when the crash occurred. Police from the California Highway Patrol investigated.
