Adulthood bill aims to trim welfare grants in CA
The measure would end family AFDC grants for about 16 000 recipients aged 16 to under 18 and reduce grants for roughly 19 000 other families. Assemblyman Paul Priolo said the bill recognizes older youths are affected but noted no count was requested from the welfare department. Gov Reagan’s broader welfare plan faced Senate defeat and the 1971 reform act already bars AFDC for most 16 plus youths unless in school or training.
