Night patrol to curb youth crime in Palma Cela

Massive grain elevator blast traps workers in Westwego

A grain elevator near the Mississippi River exploded sending a dust cloud toward New Orleans. Up to 20 workers feared dead with as many as 40 inside the plant. Firefighters and helicopters evacuated survivors as silos burned and debris rained down along the river. Authorities reported possible bomb threats prior to the blast.

Enraged hostages kill gunman at Subic Bay bank siege

At Subic Bay on a U S Naval base a gunman holding more than a dozen hostages for 47 hours was killed by enraged hostages. Marines moved in as screams and gunfire ended the standoff. The gunman, about 30, was shot or struck after threats to burn and knife captives. One bank manager was injured, others unharmed. The hostage standoff ended when police and base officials secured the scene.
