Killer winds shut power as California roars under storm

A winter storm with hurricane force winds knocked out power across southern and northern California and into Oregon. Eureka lost power to about 3,000 residents while gusts of 73 mph damaged buildings, sparked fires, and caused multiple deaths including a Vandenberg commander. Gunman holds 21 hostages at Subic Bay bank

A Filipino gunman at Prudential Bank and Trust Co inside Subic Bay base threatened to kill 21 captives including at least one American unless given a helicopter. Navy and base authorities reported hostages, many believed Filipino, with one American among them. A hostage briefly left the bank before returning inside.

$100000 mural sparks debate in Hayward city hall

The Hayward city council staff clash over a $100,000 mural planned for Centennial Hall. Artist William Wiley, hailed as an internationally known painter and filmmaker, unveiled the first panel and sketches, while Mayor Ilene Weinreb said no final decision has been made.

Bonds for Dumbarton Bridge authorized

The California Toll Bridge Authority authorized revenue bonds of 2 million dollars to fund the Dumbarton Bridge construction. Bonds will be in 5000 dollar denominations, carry taxes and interest, mature in 1906, and be repaid from toll revenues. The plan includes funding from cash and bonds with a portion for safety and related projects, as the authority dissolves and a new transportation body forms.
