Coast Guard helicopter saves man atop silo amid grain blast

In Westwego Louisiana a Coast Guard helicopter hoisted a man from atop a burning silo at the Continental Grain Elevator as 22 bodies were recovered and 13 more people are missing after a chain reaction explosion during a $17 million remodeling project. The rescue came after three attempts as winds shifted and smoke filled the craft.

Muralist Wiley Won’t Submit Sketches for Hayward Project

Hayward artist William T. Wiley warns he will drop the $106,000 Centennial Hall mural if forced to provide advance sketches. He says he will only submit completed panels and will walk away rather than compromise artistic freedom. City council and a hired committee seek sketches to guide future scenes and a broader Hayward focus, but Wiley insists on working from finished panels.

Hayward critic weighs mural for Arts Festival panel

He calls it mostly academic and symbolic, with a vaquero, two somber women, a blacksmith, a dove, and many symbols like a horse shoe and covered wagon, arguing it requires artistic judgment to judge its innovation.

Rain Piles Up As South County Receives Heavy Rain and Snow

Rain totals above normal with Hayward receiving 0.6 inches and Pleasanton 1.5 inches. BART to offer low fares on Saturdays in January

BART will charge a maximum 50 cent fare on four Saturdays in January as part of a ridership promo. With Saturday service now permanent, analysts expect ridership to rise from about 50 000 normal Saturdays to roughly 67 800 while revenue nears 300 000, though AC Travail strikes and other factors may alter totals.

Water from Bay Becomes Drinkable in S F Bay Water System

Roy Dudley of Allied Water Corp demonstrates the SweetWater unit that desalinates seawater through reverse osmosis, turning dirty San Francisco Bay water into clean drinkable water. The compact 43 pound unit, costing around 4700 dollars, pumps 159 to 200 gallons daily and could be adapted to wind or other energy sources.
