Intermittent rain with heavy bursts expected through tomorrow. Tonight the low ranges from 55 to 59 degrees. Southerly winds 30 to 35 mph. Yesterday’s high and today’s low temperatures and rainfall data are partially incomplete in the report.
Rain heavy at times across California through Wednesday with high temperatures in the 40s to 60s and south winds 15 to 50 mph. Gusts to gale force near the coast and in the Salinas and Monterey regions. Snow expected above 9,000 feet in the Sierra, with varied conditions from north to south and areas seeing mild spells.

In Barre Pennsylvania three of four miners survived a coal mine cave in near a Plymouth coal seam. Lawrence Malachefski, 37, of Raven was killed, buried under 240 tons of coal about 300 feet underground. State mine officials said three other workers were found and would be dug out as crews worked through the snow.
Captain Frederick W. Mehle faced worsening conditions aboard the 7,600-ton Smith Voyager after most crew abandoned ship. The ship rode high on heavy seas 780 miles southeast of Bermuda with 2,000 fathoms of water beneath, as a rescue tug and crew awaited to tow the vessel and its 10,000 tons of grain cargo. Four of the 42 crew members died, 34 were rescued by a German freighter, while Mehle and three remaining crew stayed aboard before boarding the rescue ship.
Two men dragged to safety an hour after the coven were declared in good condition at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Albert Kotch 42 of Larksville and Anthony Saitts of West Pittston suffered widespread lacerations. Peter Byczkowski 4 of Plymouth remained trapped about 10 hours before rescue. he was in good spirits and hospitalized. The report notes unprecedented public cooperation in Christmas mail delivery, with 7 billion pieces expected to be delivered by Christmas Eve, up from last year's 7 billion.
Wreckage of the Liberian freighter San Patrick was found after a storm off the Aleutians. Eight of its 32 crewmen and four lifeboats are missing. The 52 foot vessel, bound for Japan with grain, sent three SOS calls Thursday night. A navy tug and a Japanese ore carrier aided the search, but no survivors were located. An oil slick and amber fragments were later found, and a Navy pilot reported badly battered wreckage.
In Copenhagen Fresno AP report, a Danish foreign ministry official pleaded guilty to spying charges. Three unnamed Polich embassy officials, including a military attaché, were expelled last month for illegally exploiting Danish territory to seek information about allied defense interests. The case involves the death of Taylor Teaford, 51.
Los Angeles health officials announce a county program next month to immunize all children under five against diphtheria whooping cough tetanus and polio. Project director Dr Benjamin A Kagan says about half of 678238 under five are inadequately protected against diphtheria tetanus and whooping cough and about a third lack polio immunity. The effort will be financed by a federal grant.
Erma Jordan, 22, testified she grabbed Teaford with a butcher knife on November 10 after he forced entry into her home. She had previously faced a murder charge, but the accusation was reduced at the district attorney's office request.
Washington AP reports an uncommitted bloc of 1 to 30 National Committee members could decide whether Dean Burch remains GOP national chairman. Burch, earning 30 000 a year, claims backing of about 65 of 132 committee members ahead of Jan 22 23 Chicago meeting. Key allies Barry Goldwater and William Miller back his bid to stay, while critics press for change. Morton remains cautious about broad support and practical governing margins.
Stanton Sanson, 64, industrialist and driving force behind Florida higher education expansion, died Monday in Miami Beach. He founded Artcraft Hosiery Mills and later Sanson Hosiery Mills, serving as president until his 1952 retirement. Born in Philadelphia.

In Seattle a California man LeRoy F. Robbins pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy over a $500,000 archery equipment promotion racket. Four co defendants were indieted last May by a federal grand jury. The group operated as World Wide Automatic Archery Inc. and World Wide Indoor Automatic Archery Lanes Inc. with investors from several states.
Pilots for Goldwater will reform next month as Pilots for the American Republic under Barry Goldwater as national commander. Founder Robert F. Adickes, a 43 year old TWA captain, said about 12 key members met in Phoenix to form a non profit. The group previously raised support from about 26 000 pilots across 50 states and various aviation sectors.
Lucille Mier, an expectant mother, and her three children faced bail denial as the court weighed charges against Gordon E. Miller. Prosecutors allege Miller murdered his dentist husband by arson on Oct 8, with the accused's wife claiming the fire was accidental. Defense attorney Edward P. Foley argued pregnancy should not prejudice Mrs. Miller's release. the judge postponed until Jan 11 to consider the matter.
The AP reports Communist China announced it captured a Nationalist Chinese pilot from a reconnaissance plane shot down over East China. Peking radio identified the pilot as Maj. Effleh Hsiang-ho. The Nationalist air force meanwhile said an RF I dis was missing on a coastal mission last Saturday.
Police recovered a car believed used by bandits in a half million dollar bank truck robbery in Paterson New Jersey. The masked men stopped at St Anthony's church rectory and held four priests and a janitor at gunpoint before escaping with 511000 in cash and 1700 in church funds. The theft occurred during a morning church collection run and involved two bank messengers. Authorities said the vehicle had been reported stolen over a month earlier and disclosed few descriptions of the perpetrators. The crime was described as the biggest in New Jersey history, masterminded by professionals familiar with the route and schedule.
Washington AFL-CIO President Coughlin floated a four day work week plan saying it could immediately reduce unemployment in the United States. He told from the Capital radio program that an early acceptance might come soon. The proposal calls for four days, two hours per day, with salaries unchanged from the current five day week.
