General Douglas MacArthur arrived in San Francisco to a spontaneous, jubilant welcome. Crowds packed streets from the airport to the St Francis Hotel, waving flags and banners "Hi Mac, Welcome Back." The open car ride drew cheers, with Mayor Robinson and others greeting him. Arthur, his son, waved from the crowd as witnesses described a throng eager for the returning commander.

A 20 year old Navy pharmacist's mate was held on allegations of trafficking morphine valued at 425000 aboard the battleship Missouri while en route to Norfolk Virginia. Donald L Pasco of Breckenridge Kentucky is named as custody. Federal agents say he tried to sell morphine to an undercover officer aboard the ship. About 120 quarts of morphine were found in the raid aboard the vessel.
Industrial stocks climbed to new highs in New York trading, lifting the overall market. The industrial group led gains, pushing the average to its best level since June 10, 1930, while overall value rose modestly and the market showed a cautious upturn this session.
