Chick Reid Poorly Wounded After Deer Hunt Accident

Charles Reid 18, Cumberland, was hunting with Ed Williams at Comox Lake. His loaded rifle discharged after slipping into a rut, piercing his lung. He reached the cabin, wrapped in a blanket, and was taken to hospital two hours later. Doctors report serious but steady condition.

Forty Hour Storm Strikes Comox Valley Flooded Areas

Comox Valley endured a long rainstorm causing severe flooding as water covered dykes and basements from Courtenay to Sandwich. Bridges failed along the Island Highway with two small structures at Union Bay saved after hard work. No casualties reported though locals faced rising waters and navigated by boat or raft.

Old Timer Ben Evans Passes After Illness at 68

Cumberland miner Ben Evans died Monday after months of illness. A longtime resident and notable figure in the community he was 68. Funeral services conducted by the Knights of Pythias Ladysmith Lodge were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday from the undertaker parlors to Cumberland Cemetery. He is survived by a wife, a daughter Mrs. Thomas Hannay, and a son.

First Concert of the Season Impresses Cumberland Choir

The Cumberland Choral Society gave its season opener at Ilo-Ilo Theatre on Thursday with Gideon Hicks the featured soloist. The choir under C W Sillénce delivered strong performance with Mrs Clifford Warn accompanying. The audience applauded Hicks after solos including Handel Verdi and Sullivan, and stage decor was by Mesdames Robinson Finch and Mumford.

Officials map early Connaught cup eliminations

BC Soccer Association officials plan to start the Connaught Cup eliminations by March and seek wide club entry. Last year only LA entered mainland play, with Nanaimo City taking the Dominion title.
