Chick Reid Seriously Wounded While Deer Hunting at Comox Lake

Charles Reid 18 of Cumberland was hunting with Ed Williams when a loaded rifle discharged after Reid slipped on a small bluff. He was shot through the lung and reached the cabin, then was taken to a local hospital by Williams. Doctors report he is seriously wounded but holding his own.

Forty Hour Storm Disrupts Comox Valley Roads and Dykes

A historic Comox Valley storm left dykes breached and streets flooded from Courtenay to the Sandwich district. Farmers on the dyke relied on boats for access while basements filled overseas, bridges failed, and a local hotel feared rising flood threats. One man carried from his house to the road, and duck hunter Charlie Shannon nearly became the duck.

Regular City Council Meeting Notes 1924

The city council met on Monday with Mayor Parnham presiding and all aldermen present except J J Potter. Minutes were adopted, letters read including a $500 donation from Canadian Collieries for Fire Hall improvements and a $1289.33 claim from the District Engineer for highway upkeep. Reports covered bank balance of 4587.24 and eight measles cases since the prior meeting. Plumbing issues at the Fire Hall remained unresolved.

Obituary of Cumberland Miner Ben Evans

Ben Evans, a longtime Cumberland miner and local pioneer, died after months of illness at age sixty eight. He was a member of the Ladysmith Knights of Pythias Lodge and funeral rites by that order were held at 3 30 p m Thursday from the undertaker’s parlors to Cumberland cemetery. He leaves a widow a daughter Mrs Thomas Hannay and a son.

First Cumberland Choral Society Concert Delights Ilo Ilo Theatre

The Cumberland Choral Society opened its season at the Ilo Ilo Theatre with Gideon Hicks a celebrated baritone delivering Handel Verdi Schubert Haydn and Nevin selections. The choir led by C W Sillénce impressed amid piano accompaniment by Mrs. A E Jeffrey and Mrs. Clifford Warn. The audience gave Hicks a standing ovation and praised the stage setup by Mesdames Robinson Finch and Mumford.
