The Democratic national convention endorsed a dry plank pledging enforcement of the eighteenth amendment and federal laws. The platform criticized the Republican administration and foreign policy while avoiding references to the League of Nations or the world court.
Heavy rainstorms lash Tennessee and Kentucky killing one man deputy sheriff John S Lewis in Nashville by electrocution. A Nashville house burns as 4.39 inches rainfall in 24 hours floods 13 feet of Cumberland River. Alexandria DeKalb county tornado ruins 23 homes 44 barns. Lexington reports half a million dollars in flood damage. Streets blocked and travel hindered by downed trees and high water.
Jack Moran, renowned tenor from Creston and recent winner at the southwestern Iowa high school music contest, will perform two numbers at the municipal band concert in McKinley Park Sunday afternoon starting at 3 o clock. He will be accompanied by a program including Striking Fire Lincoln Poe and The Drummer s Delight and Moonlight on the Nile among others.
A severe hail storm yesterday afternoon between 3 and 4 o'clock caused considerable damage to corn and some damage to small grain in the Macksburg area. The heaviest destruction occurred east and south of town where corn was riddled by hail.
An amateur vaudeville show with a Houdini act and a clown band contest tops Creston's Fourth of July program guided by Walter Koerner. A bathing beauty contest for children, with three silver trophies, will be displayed at Wendel jewelry. The day opens with army plane demonstrations from Kansas City, followed by a 11 o'clock parade ending at Stone street. All events except a baseball game and dances are free at McKinley Park with prizes awarded in contests.
Eighty two rural schools will operate in Union county for the 1928 1929 year with most opening September 3 Miss Ella M Day county superintendent reports Twenty beginners and seven new teachers will teach in the county this year while the rest bring prior Union county experience The county institute will be held in Creston August 30 and 31 to review the new course of study before school starts.

John Henry Mears and Captain C O D Collyer started from the Battery at 5 am in a seaplane to chase the Olympic and attempt a world circumnavigation in 23 days. They rode the Olympic after landing near the pilot boat, planning a route via Cherbourg Paris Berlin Moscow across Siberia to Tokio before the Pacific leg.
Dr Ed C Ayres after 35 years as a physician in Lorimor retires due to ill health. Dr Arthur Ayres of Leighton will move to Lorimor to take over the practice. He had served as a medical officer in the army during World War I and was a prominent local figure.
Union county residents drove to Ames for the annual county tour to Iowa State College. They met at Morrell hall on campus at 9 30 to begin a day visiting college departments. New Hope township farm bureau postponed its monthly meeting to Roy Hammans home near Lorimor.
A death toll of at least 100 is reported from western Japan where floods are severe and property loss is high. The flood is worst in Kyushu with 1,500 houses and 70,000 acres underwater. A force of 4,000 troops was ordered to strengthen embankments at Kyomoto and maintain communications between Fukuoka and Saga. Property damage is estimated over $1,000,000.
United States Senator Thomas J. Heflin of Alabama refused to comment after learning Al Smith was nominated by Democrats in Houston. He called the Smith Robinson ticket weak for the nation and warned that Tammany influence could strike the party a foul blow. He predicted Smith would suffer the worst licking any Democrat nominee ever received.
Locals Mr and Mrs R H Johnson of Thayer visited Creston for business. The Creston school board met to plan the upcoming year. Union county roads were to be dragged with the rest Saturday after heavy rains left all roads muddy. Six autos carrying 30 American Legion members and other Creston legionaires plowed to Bedford, aiding Fourth of July events and a legion convention in the west end. Bond for W H Betts, jailed on a mortgaged property charge, reduced from 1000 to 500 by Judge Maxwell at habeas corpus hearing after an earlier inability to post 1000 bail.
Albany June 29 Gov Alfred E Smith reaffirmed support for major changes to national prohibition citing corruption and lawlessness. He urged change via elected representatives while defending local self government and states rights as paths to temperance.
S C Bowers of Kent long a Republican figure in Union County is named temporary chairman for the county convention opening at 11 AM tomorrow at the courthouse. W J Colbert, county chairman, will call the gathering to order as committees are chosen then adjourn to the afternoon session for reports and election of officers and delegates to Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. After adjournment the county central committee will organize for the year.
After the convention opened the governor received celebratory embraces and congratulatory shouts from friends and his daughter. He issued a brief statement saying his first ballot nomination fills him with joy and satisfaction shared by his family and circle.
The Democratic National Convention filed Alfred E. Smith of New York for president and Joseph T. Robinson of Arkansas for vice president on the first ballot, amid a landslide showing for Robinson and a dramatic shift to Smith led by Ohio. Delegates from Mississippi Indiana Nebraska Kansas Tennessee quickly backed Smith, reducing opposition. The session in Houston adjourned sine die after four days.
Mrs J V Richardson of Creston defeated Mrs Sam Marshall of Atlantic 5 and 4 to reach the final against Mrs A C Clapp of Harlan for the southwestern Iowa women s pelt title at Council Bluffs Country Club. In the consolation flight Miss Margaret Clapp beat Miss Fern Wilson 7 and 6 and Miss Boss Jeffrey defeated Miss Doris Ross 4 and 3.
