USDA forecasters expect net farm income around 25 billion dollars in 1978, about 25 percent higher than 1977, with Wisconsin benefiting from stable milk prices and anticipated price bumps. Grain and livestock markets may dip from spring peaks yet stay well above last year’s lows, and livestock values likely stay 20 to 25 percent above 1977 levels amid strong demand.
John F. Oncken, 47, joins the American Dairy Association of Wisconsin as general manager this Saturday, succeeding retired William Johnson. A Stoughton native, Oncken has led beef advertising at American Breeders Service and served as agricultural director at WFRV-TV Green Bay and Clark County agent 1957–1965. He and his wife Jenette will live in Sun Prairie with two children at home and another at UW-Oshkosh.
Midwest Livestock Producers, based in Francis Creek with markets in Ettrick and Granton, reports a record sales total of 63.7 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, up from 51.5 million. The Lomba station led with 14.1 million, followed by Ettrick Trempealeau County at 11.4 million and Marion at 9.5 million. The co op, formed in 1968, operates auctions in Monticello Shullsburg Ettrick Granton and feeder pig auctions at Dale and Dodgeville. Feeder pigs are shipped to hog finishers in 16 states. Midwest focuses on Holstein replacement heifers shipped nationwide and abroad.
