Coalition fights natural gas decontrol

The Wisconsin Action Coalition says lifting federal controls on old natural gas would raise fertilizer costs for Wisconsin farmers. It projects the average corn farmer would pay $606 next year and $890 in 1984, with nitrogen fertilizer being the main expense. Richard Presser notes Congress blocked decontrol last year, but the Reagan administration seeks it via FERC, warning Wisconsin faces heavy impact due to its agriculture.

Earl blames Dreyfus for silence on Wisconsin farm crisis

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Earl, during a Eau Claire swing, charged Governor Lee Dreyfus and his administration with silence as Wisconsin farmers face historically low income. Earl cited inflation adjusted farm income at a 1934 low, urged reform of federal farming funding, dairy labeling, and stricter rules on dairy product labeling. He warned Terry Kohler would prolong the silence and called for action to support dairy, corn marketing, and foreign trade policy.
