Agriculture board backs SB 72 to merge conservation boards
The state agriculture board unanimously endorses SB 72, a bill by Senator Thomas Harnisch to merge the Board of Soil and Water Conservation Districts into the Agriculture Department. The measure would replace county soil and water panels with county land conservation committees and aims to improve pollution control and local input amid Harnisch recall efforts.

State land board plan replaces multiple agencies
At the state level a single Land Conservation Board would replace the state Board of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and the Agriculture Land Preservation Board. The new board would include three county appointees, two from the governor, and the state agriculture and administration secretaries. County groups would regulate soil and water conservation, while the state board would collect statewide data and develop model regulations for counties. Public hearings would replace county referenda for regulation changes.

Senate push to block USDA lunch rule changes
Sen. John Melcher leads a non binding move in the Senate to oppose proposed USDA changes to the school lunch program. The plan would classify ketchup and relish as vegetables and soybean meat as meat, cut portions of meat vegetables bread and milk, and seek to preserve nutritional value for federal aid. Melcher argues the proposals lack justification and could trigger further unsafe changes. The resolution will be reviewed by the Senate Agriculture Committee later this month.
