Western Wisconsin set to become fruit hub says UW expert
Horticulturist Dr. Bob Tomesh of the University of Wisconsin River Falls outlines a plan for western Wisconsin to grow grapes and small fruits along a 200 mile by 25 mile corridor beside the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers. He notes milder inland temperatures and longer growing seasons, projects test plots from Grantsburg to Prairie du Chien, and envisions a regional grape and berry industry with potential yields and local markets including a Madison area winery.

California grape harvest promises best vintage for consumers
California’s 1982 wine grape harvest begins with expectations of a record crop and high quality. Prices are falling as supply grows 5 to 7 percent while demand rises 2 percent annually, aided by a stronger dollar making imports cheaper and more vintners entering the market. Gallo trims grape prices 10 to 40 percent in parts of the state, leaving vintners with bulky premium stock despite the bargain for shoppers.
