Area Grain Reserve Tops Two Million Bushels
ASCS district supervisors Wey West of Rice Lake and Perry Overlein of Black River Falls report more than two million bushels of corn oats wheat and barley placed in the Grain Reserve by farmers across 13 area counties this year. Jet stream blamed for May rainfall shortfall in region
Weather expert Mr. Graff at the Minneapolis bureau links May rain shortfall to a southward jet stream. Moisture from the Gulf was pushed away, leaving Polk county and others below normal while June to September outlook shows 4.5 inches, 3.5 inches, and 3.7 inches respectively. Planting in Minnesota and west central Wisconsin runs about two days behind typical pace. Subsoil moisture remains strong for this time of year despite surface moisture recharge from last weekend.
