University of Wisconsin researchers studied 44 dairy farms with at least 65 percent debt to invested capital and ages 35 or younger, finding that rising land values allowed many to stay in farming despite deficit cash flow. High profit farms outperformed in milk per cow and profits, aided by better management and timely hay production, while all faced adversity and relied on real estate appreciation to raise net worth.
