Co op faces large fish kill bill in Beaver Dam River
The DNR charges the Dodge County Cooperative $304844 for a May fish kill in the Beaver Dam River amounting to 34871 fish lost. A DNA investigation tied the spill to 28 percent liquid nitrogen fertilizer, flushed into a catch basin near the co op and into the river. If unpaid, the bill goes to the State Justice Department for collection. Money will fund fisheries improvements along the 17 mile river reach from Beaver Dam to Mud Lake Wildlife Area. The incident could lead to criminal charges. the DNR has not decided. Fish losses include 33288 crappies and several other species with state-per-fish values listed.
