USDA Expands Free Butter and Cheese Aid to Needy
The Agriculture Department plans 50 million pounds of butter for free distribution to the needy, following a cheese giveaway that will exceed 220 million pounds and cost about 320 million dollars. Officials say states, including Wisconsin, will coordinate with regional offices, as stockpiles of dairy products remain large.
Butter Distribution Expands After Iowa Pilot Success
First load of the season for every American. For states that respond quickly to the federal offer, free butter could be given away as early as this month. A pilot in Waterloo Iowa distributed 153,000 pounds to low income residents at 92 sites across a 10 county area. The cheese program will continue, with 1.3 million pounds planned for late June. Wisconsin distribution is unsettled, while Iowa and other states prepare to extend the program to include honey turkey oats and peanut butter. County agencies will handle most cheese and butter distributions with sites listed across Eau Claire Trempealeau and other counties. The plan aims to provide nearly $75 million of donated foods to needy families.

Bees Lagging In Wisconsin Apple Season As Cold Wet Spring Hits
Wisconsin beekeepers report a month delay in bee buildup due to a cold wet spring. Winter losses of 25 to 60 percent hit hives statewide, with honey crops down last summer and a sluggish June nectar flow. Some keepers, like JoAnne Weber, use Canadian Wrap to insulate and protect colonies, reducing feeding costs. Apple growers in Galesville area expect about 20 percent smaller crops amid poor pollination and weather.
