Wild bee tracker recalls early love of apiary life
Philip Czekalski, 76, of Weyerhaeuser, remembers childhood wild-bee hunting and his single long-time hobby of four beehives. He began as a teen by harvesting a bee tree and later perfected tracking using flour dust, honey sugar, and pumpkin blossoms. Trempealeau County Beekeepers plan the summer meeting at 7:30 p.m. June 22 at the Whitehall-Pigeon Rod and Gun Club, then a courthouse business session in Whitehall.

Beekeeper's Long Road To Honey Harvest In Wisconsin
Skunk hunter grain field memories frame a farmer’s life in Wisconsin. Czekalski planned beekeeping for years, harvesting about 50 pounds of dark honey from bees in Weyerhaeuser after receiving a 1973 permit from E.A. Collins of Bloomer. He once milking 40 Guernsey cows and later worked at a Bruce mink ranch before keeping bees near his village.

Beekeeper Tracks Wildlife Toll on Village Hives
Mr. Czekalski reports bears and skunks disturb his bee operation near the village. Skunks raid hives, cats are released, and traps catch occasional wildlife. Bees provide pollination for community gardens though cooler spring limits foraging. He notes wild hives persist and domestic hives may swarm into the woods when left untreated.
