Chickadees vanish from Wisconsin bird counts
In three December all-day counts in Taylor and Clark counties and a Marshfield Stevens Point run, 378 chickadees were recorded across the season, but only two were finally located during later May efforts. The observer questions why chickadees are so scarce now, noting potential northward movement, habitat shifts, or quiet behavior as explanations.

Revised lamprey barrier doing the job
More than 6,300 sea lampreys were trapped at the rebuilt Brule River barrier trap through May and early June. The barrier, costing 250000 dollars, blocks lampreys from spawning while letting trout pass, and could cut chemical treatments. University of Wisconsin Eau Claire will study genetics, while disposal plans include landfill or research use.
