State UW Extension faces vacancies amid budget cuts and hiring freeze
Testimony from Gail Skinner, director of the Western District, warned that budget cuts and Gramm-Rudman-Hollings imposed reductions threaten Extension positions across 14 counties. Polk and Eau Claire counties already lack full staff, Trempealeau County 4-H posts are vacant, and stipulations push some work to part time or county-funded staffing. The district could lose about 25 percent of its $232,000 budget impact, forcing staff sharing or program cuts while adopting videoconferencing and teleconferences to stretch remaining resources.
