Hay program fraud trial starts in Eau Claire
In federal court in Eau Claire a rural Dunn County dairy farmer, LaVerne E. Toycen, 59, goes on trial over alleged fraudulent claims under the 1976 77 Hay Transportation Assistance Program. Jury selection, opening statements and testimony began Monday as prosecutors contend Toycen filed invoices for five loads of hay while only one load was due.

Low bids come in under estimate for UW veterinary school
Apparent low bids for the veterinary medicine school on the UW Madison campus total about 14.9 million, roughly 2 million below estimates. General construction bid was won by Anthony Grignano Co of Madison at 7.46 million, with remaining contracts at UW River Falls for 906 thousand and a Madison farm site for about 3 million. The UW Board of Regents had urged delaying award for review, but the State Building Commission and Legislature have final say.
