The Painter of Prairie Chickens and a Patience Kept Photo
In the early 1900s prairie chickens thrived as flocks dotted the fields. A man and his camera hid in cornshocks, using a cardboard cover to capture a dramatic shot of the birds feeding. The image sparked demand, later hung in Congressman Lester Johnson’s office, and sparked debate over why these game birds declined due to habitat loss hunting and foxes.

Prairie Chicken Photo From Cadett Farm Draws Praise
John Kysilko on his farm northeast of Cadett captured a winter 1939 shot of prairie chickens using a Brownie camera while hidden in a cornshock. The lone image, praised by Gordon MacQuarrie as one of the greatest wildlife photos, shows the flock as it stood 42 years ago. The Kysilkos later relocated along Hwy 178 between Chippewa Falls and Cornell, where they raise prize dahlias.
