Wisconsin land ownership concentrated among a few
An economist from UW Madison and USDA finds five percent of Wisconsin landowners hold about 53 percent of privately owned land in the state and similar patterns across the North Central region. The largest 1 percent own 19 percent in Wisconsin, 26 percent regionally, with nationwide figures showing 48 percent of land controlled by 1 percent of owners. The study, based on 37,000 responses from 1978, notes farmers and farm managers own about half of Wisconsin’s private land. Non-family entities own 21 million acres regionwide, 5 percent of private land, while Wisconsin shows higher non-family ownership. The report highlights age, residence, and inheritance patterns shaping ownership.
