Star of Christmas to be visible in area Dec. 31
A rare astronomical event to be visible on New Year’s Eve as Jupiter and Saturn rise in the east only about 1 degree apart. UW Madison astronomers note a triple conjunction with future pairings on March 4 and July 23 1981 and rare future occurrences. Naked eye viewing possible for several days with Saturn’s rings visible through a telescope on clear nights.

Christmas Tradition Born in Pierce County Founder Ends 50 Years
Randolph Haugan, born in the Martell area, created and edited the annual Christmas volume "Christmas: An American Annual of Christmas Literature and Art" since 1931. He spent four decades as Augsburg Publishing House manager in Minneapolis and plans to retire after the 1980 edition, ending a half century of publishing.
