August bird scene shows residents and migrants

In late August a mix of summer residents and fall migrants fills western Wisconsin skies. I counted over 100 nighthawks in ten minutes and observed mallards, wood ducks, swallows, cedar waxwings, kingbirds, robins, sandpipers, and late warblers. A goshawk nest was found high in a big oak, with a nearby warning about protecting the site.

DNR debates nickel deposit on beverage containers

Idaho Mortar Creek fire under control after week of rain

The Mortar Creek fire in Idaho, size 65 000 acres, required 3 000 men for 24 days at a cost of 4 million dollars before a mop-up crew of 10 remained. The blaze, the state's largest since 1934, was deemed under control by the U S Forest Service after rainfall aided containment. The fire began July 26 likely from an out of control campfire by a rafting party on the Middle Fork Salmon River. No commercial timber burned, but erosion risk could pollute Salmon River spawning grounds for chinook salmon and steelhead.
