Extension of dairy supports cited to protect farmers
Agriculture Secretary Bob Bergland said the Carter administration will seek a dairy price supports extension through 1981 to avoid a sharp drop in dairy farmers. He warned many dairymen may quit as beef prices rise, noting the U S dairy cow farms have declined from about 2 million in 1959 and continue to fall.
Dairy price supports eyed at 80 percent parity
National Milk Producers Federation notes 400,000 dairy workers, with farms under 20 cows driving most declines over 20 years. Bergland backs 80 percent parity to sustain production and guard consumer prices as House Agriculture Committee votes to extend the current support through two more years.

Keep buried fuel tanks far from water supply Madison Wisconsin DNR cautions
The Wisconsin DNR urges farmers to place underground gasoline and heating oil tanks away from wells. Water wells must be at least 100 feet from tanks on commercial sites, and 25 feet from residential wells on farms. Over five years the DNR logged 100 reports of petroleum contaminations but few inquiries on tank locations. Local district DNR offices offer guidance.

Weather slows Wisconsin corn crop in late season setback
Wisconsin crop reporter Marvin Heiser warns that cool weather and ongoing rain slow the corn crop, risking frost damage similar to 1974 when September frosts cost farmers about 200 million dollars. Farmers report a six week frost-free window is needed, with harvest likely to be the slowest on record as corn runs 10 days to two weeks behind normal.
