HMOs: A New Trend in Health Care Costs
Health maintenance organizations are expanding nationwide to control rising medical costs. A five year NEJM study shows HMO members in Puget Sound had 40 percent fewer hospital admissions and about 25 percent lower overall costs than fee-for-service patients. HMOs emphasize prevention, limited provider choice, and prepaid coverage.
