Secret crop near first harvest at ginseng gardens
Ginseng crop at Blue River ginseng gardens in southwestern Richland County nears its first harvest. The 70 acre Ag-Re-Co operation partners with University of Wisconsin Madison researchers to test disease resistance and seed production traits on this large scale Wisconsin site. Harvest is expected after three to four years with potential yields around 3 000 pounds per acre and prices of forty to sixty dollars per dried pound.

Aldicarb study links low doses to immune suppression
Madison scientists report that low aldicarb levels consistently suppress mouse immune systems in several experiments. Aldicarb, a Temik breakdown product from Union Carbide, is EPA approved for multiple crops and used mainly on Wisconsin potatoes. Water tests since 1981 show the chemical in Portage and other counties, with a high of 54 ppb in a Portage County well, as the DNR monitors wells in 21 counties.

Aldicarb study links low dose exposure to immune impact
University of Wisconsin Madison researchers report that mice given the lowest aldicarb concentration in drinking water showed the greatest immune impairment after exposure. The team plans further work over two to three years, noting no current health risk but emphasizing the need for immunotoxicity studies before pesticide approvals.
