UW Extension swine specialist Carl Hirschinger says a new Wis-Aid New York computer program lets judges rank hogs in minutes rather than hours. It offers four evaluation options including days to 230 pounds, lean output, live rank, and carcass muscle percentage, with county offices or shows able to access or run it via linked terminals.
A UW Madison researcher said the death of a pig with a rare gene combination at the Swine Barn may waste ten years of lipoprotein research. Jan Rapacz says the gene itself likely remains, but the rare form in the pig is lost. The pig, found June 2 on a Madison street, was key to studies on arteries heart disease and immunity. The remains were frozen for testing to confirm if it was the research pig.
Wisconsin beekeepers can join an Educational Telephone Network conference on October 1 from 8:30 to 10:20 p.m. Entomologist Walt Gojmerac notes winter is critical as many colonies perish. The program covers winter requirements, colony prep, size, disease treatment, and weather protection with UW Extension and USDA Bee Research Laboratory experts.
