Budget vetoes push back UW veterinary school and farm projects

Wisconsin Gov. Lee Dreyfus signed the 1981 83 budget with 121 vetoes that delay the UW Madison School of Veterinary Medicine opening by at least a year and block the transfer of the state Board of Soil and Water Conservation Districts to the agriculture department. The veto cuts slash building funds and trigger broader reductions across agencies, risking the UW experimental farms program and forcing tax payments on lands used for experiments. Dean Leo Walsh warns the multiyear impact could force cuts or land sales to absorb the 430 000 annual tax charge plus reduced budgets.
