Western visitor stirs Wisconsin birdwatchers over rare gray crowned rosy finch
John Russell of Menomonie sighted a gray crowned rosy finch among his winter grosbeak flock in late February. The pale pinkish brown finch with a gray crown and large white wing patch puzzled observers, led to trips across Lower Lake Tainter area, then a confirmed sighting on March 15. The rarity drew collectors from Milwaukee and northern Illinois, with hopes it may return.
