Dairy herd tops 900 pounds fat per cow in Wisconsin
The Vanderties dairy herd averaged 902 pounds butterfat per cow on official February DHIA tests, a Wisconsin record and potentially a national milestone. Their simple ration of corn silage and oats with a cheap protein supplement kept cows lean and productive, while managerial routines and a small 32-cow herd propelled steady gains from 408 pounds in 1945 to over 900 in 1981.
