Paying children for farm work for tax deduction in 1981
Regularly paying children fair wages for farm work allows a tax deduction as a farm expense. The child’s earnings are not taxed unless total wages exceed 3310, and unearned income or a married child affects this rule. The parent may still claim a dependent exemption of 1000 per child if providing over half support, with earnings used for clothing or education without jeopardizing the exemption. Social Security for a minor’s earnings may not apply if the farm is not incorporated or run as a partnership.

Early farm days in Conrath recalled by Edward J Siolkowski
Edward J Siolkowski recounts the Ben F Faast Land and Colonization Co 1907 venture into Conrath Wisconsin purchasing 30000 acres around Conrath Sheldon and south of Weyerhaeuser for colonization. Immigrant buyers rode the Velvet Special train with an eight piece band. He describes homestead land bought for 540 in gold, early hardships building a one room house, pine stump clearing, and hand built road to school. The first school began 1908 in John Conrath's log house with teachers earning 35 monthly. The narrative covers early community life with blueberries picked for sale, lack of roads, and a 1908 Presbyterian church and Sunday school. The accompanying 1910 school image was taken for a 50th wedding anniversary in 1977.
