Washington reports President Truman will undertake an active speaking campaign if nominated. Press Secretary Ross said no detailed plans exist and no out of town engagements are set beyond a Bolivar, Missouri visit with Venezuela’s president to dedicate a Simon Bolivar statue.
PAWLING NY Dewey and Warren open a meeting to curb optimism within the Republican ranks as they plan a vigorous cross nation campaign. Warren tours New York City and Dewey assesses state appointments, while Republicans aim to win the presidency Senate and House races and many local offices.
About 1200 youths and leaders gathered at Iowa State College for the annual 1948 course. Notre Dame coach Frank Leahy was slated to highlight the event with a talk comparing athletic competition to democratic government workings.
A 10 month old boy, Craig Allen Coburn, died after he placed an extension lamp cord in his mouth. The accident happened at the Coburn home in Vinton Sunday. The child’s parents Mr and Mrs Allen Coburn and a sister survive.

The Western Engineering company of Harlan will allow the city 556 toward the resurfacing of South Thirty-fifth Street. Rex Finley informed city officials. Seven blocks from Broadway to Seventh Avenue were oiled in March 1947. The bill of 1,556 has not been paid. Residents complain the street is full of holes and ruts. They originally collected 841 to help pay for the project. that money remains on deposit at city hall. Alderman Albert L. Cleveland advocates resurfacing, and Finley says he will settle with the city for 1,000, applying the remaining 556 to ward resurfacing. Street Commissioner Kline W. Taylor estimates the cost of resurfacing with gravel and oil at 1,270.
David Lancaster, 80, who was blind, was fatally injured when he walked off an upstairs porch at his boarding home in Keosauqua Sunday night. A recent windstorm had torn the porch bannister.

Four machine gun bandits who robbed a gambling joint and shot two policemen eluded a county wide manhunt. One suspect, Jerry Malleck of Chicago, confessed to involvement and firing a rifle during the getaway. Police traced the group to a quarry near Des Plaines river where the bandits abandoned a car and loot around $1,000.
John Leonard, 35, of Washington Pennsylvania, held in Des Moines on a confidence scheme charge, identified by three local victims as the man who used a same building racket here. Ed Bickel, Mrs Inez Kielblock and Gus Miner picked him from a Des Moines police photo. Leonard posed as a doctor or business man in the same building, then asked for a loan as the supposed nephew left town. He is jailed on three counts of obtaining money by false pretenses.
The American Friends Service plans a $25,000 gift of streptomycin to the Russian people. Three thousand five-gram vials will be distributed by the Russian Red Cross and Red Crescent to promote health.

Bernardo Anzures, 21, a Manila film actor, faces a double murder charge in the stabbing deaths of leading lady Lilian Velez, 24, and her maid in Quebon City. City Attorney Joe Ternandez said Anzures admitted the killings after the incident Sunday. He was held without bail. Anzures reportedly told police he was under a spell and did not know why he acted.

State Chairman Jake More announced plans for the session and said recalling legislators seeking re election would join. The platform will be drawn by the state Democratic convention meeting in Des Moines in July.

In New York a 42 year old grandmother Mary Farber correctly named the mystery melody Get Out of the Wilderness on ABCs Stop The Music winning a $20,000 jackpot. Prizes include a $1,000 savings bond a 38 day cruise a $1,000 fur coat a car and a $1,000 diamond ring. She and her taxi driver husband plan to use some prizes to build a home and gasoline station in West Palm Beach Florida. The tax on the winnings was estimated at about $7,000.
Attorney J. J. Hess said a petition for rehearing in the case of Dr. James C. Anderson, 60, Council Bluffs, convicted of second degree murder in the death of Miss Marian Blyth, 25, is being prepared and will be filed soon with the Iowa Supreme Court after the June 15 conviction and 20 year sentence.
