Boyne-VFW group seeks direct power option in Boyne

The Boyne-VFW group asks the city council to press Western Iowa Power to grant Southwestern Iowa Power and Light a direct option to purchase local power facilities. The plan would let the city buy power within its limits with a six month window and a 20 year franchise if voters approve. Aldermen debated ownership, with Katelman urging municipal ownership and opposing the petition. Keleher of the group said they are ready to take over the utility with an outside firm operating it.

Gould Dietz Dies Near Minneapolis

Gould Dietz, a retired Omaha bartender and aviation enthusiast, died Tuesday near Lake Minnetonka while breakfasting at Groveland. Cause given as Stuart disease. He was in town for the National Aeronautics association convention and died at the home of his niece Miss Evelyn Stickney. another niece, Mrs Carl Gage, also resides in Groveland.

Bus Franchise Vote Set for August 3 by City Council

City councilmen on Monday night set August 3 for a special election on a new bus franchise after Council Bluffs Transit company formally accepted the proposal and asked for the election. If approved, a 10 year franchise requires operation within 60 days and imposes a 2 percent occupation tax. The transit firm will cover election expenses and could have buses on streets within 30 days after the vote.

Power expansion nears for Southwest Iowa co‑ops

Creston area project backed by a $4.125 million Rural Electrification loan aims to extend service to about 18,500 farms, doubling current Southwest Iowa coverage. Five co-operatives in Adams, Clarke, Corning, Greenfield, Stanton, Osceola, and Mt Ayr would gain 151 miles of lines and a 15,000 kilowatt plant near Creston with diesel power at the site.

30 Millionth Bell Telephone Installed in Marshalltown

In Marshalltown a 26 year old Purple Heart veteran received the Bell system’s 30 millionth telephone. Northwestern Bell installed the unit at Mr and Mrs Harold Bragg’s home with ceremonies including long distance calls to Seattle and New York. The milestone follows rapid growth of the telephone network since Bell’s invention. Bragg spoke with his brother in Seattle as part of the celebration.

Britain Backs Financial Reform for $4 Billion Aid Deal

Britain pledged to stabilize its currency balance its budget and restore confidence in its monetary system in return for more than 4 billion dollars in American aid over four and a quarter years under the European Recovery Program. The agreement expires June 30 1953 and must be approved by Parliament by July 3. American shipments would resume if ratification slips.
