The Big Four foreign ministers announced progress on the Austrian treaty after adjournment. They approved an Austrian independence framework while remaining divided on German unity and economic-political questions.
The weatherman warns of a hot sticky week starting Tuesday with continued warmth and high humidity. Temperatures near 90 during the day and around 70 at night, with cloudy to mostly sunny skies and lake breezes sought by families escaping the sultry air.
The city assessor's office notes about 200 exemption forms unsigned while nearly 9,000 property owners have applied for the homestead exemption, offering tax savings up to $62.50. Deadline is July 1.

Funeral services for George F. Hamilton 85 of 300 East Washington avenue will be held 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cutler's chapel. He died midnight Saturday at a local hospital after a week with heart disease. Dr. Leon C. Hills will officiate. Bluff City lodge 71 AF and AM will conduct a ritual. Cremation follows and the ashes go to Walnut Hill cemetery. Hamilton long led Council Bluffs civic life and helped found the city auditorium, serving as its president and as head of the Dodge Armory Trust. He walked into town in 1898 and retired from the liquor store manager post in 1937 due to poor health. He also chaired Liberty Bond drives in World War I and ran for mayor in 1920.
Ted Schroeder of La Crescenta California rallied from a 2-sets deficit to defeat Gardnar Mulloy of Miami Florida in the first round at Wimbledon. Schroeder won 3-6 9-11 6-1 6-0 7-5 to advance in the championships.
Washington Secretary of Defense Johnson told senators behind closed doors that defense spending could be cut by 750 million dollars in the year beginning July 1 by reducing the air force from 70 groups proposed in Congress to 48 as urged by President Truman. Senate leaders seek at least one billion in cuts from the 15.9 billion armed forces bill, with some predicting 14.5 to 14.6 billion possible.
Council Bluffs gas supplier halts allotments for home furnace conversions. President Carl Stephens says applications filed by Saturday will be installed, with October allotment set at 1,000,000 cubic feet per day. Hardship cases and new construction receive priority. dealer installations require prior authorization.

A 40 year old Chicago man Walter A. Witz and his 9 year old son Robert died when their single engine Cessna crashed in a wooded area near Duluth Minnesota in dense fog. Another son Donald eight was in fair condition at St Marys hospital.
Wisconsin prosecutors urge a first degree murder verdict against Milton Babich for the death of Patricia Birmingham in Milwaukee. Assistant District Attorney Joseph Tierney argues against accidental death claims and urges jurors to find Babich guilty, urging them to test the gun for evidence in the jury room.
Judith Coplon testified in Washington that she did not give government secrets to Valentine Gubitchev, and that he never asked for secrets. She described her relationship with the Russian engineer arrested March 4 as personal and definite.
Rep. Jensen criticizes Secretary Brannan for proposing to test the Brannan farm plan on hog producers. He warns farmers could lose two thirds of hog value while awaiting congressional funding. Jensen argues the plan is political trickery and would raise consumer costs.
A World War I veteran from Sioux City was elected state commander of the Disabled American Veterans at the close of a four day convention held at the Hotel Chieftain. Sam Wolcott replaces Cecil W. Decker of Waterloo and Cedar Rapids will host the 1950 convention.
