Medical College Dean Shoots Self in Garage Tragedy

IOWACITY Coroner George Callahan reported that Pr Mayo Soley 42 dean of the University of Iowa medical college committed death by own action Tuesday morning. He said there was no apparent reason for the act. Soley shot himself in his garage after returning from his office. He had been dean since July 1, 1948 and previously served as assistant dean and medicine professor at the University of California in San Francisco.

Greek king commutes 35 death sentences to life imprisonment

King Paul issued a decree converting the death sentences of 35 individuals, four of them women, to life imprisonment. The convicts had been condemned under emergency measures for crimes linked to the communist guerrilla rebellion.

Summer Delivers Bright Start After Brief Thunderstorm

A bright sunny day opened summer at 12 03 p m Tuesday following a brief Monday night thunderstorm that cooled temperatures. Highs reached the mid 80s Tuesday with .24 inch rain, while Monday’s heat topped 95. The forecast calls for more sun and warm weather with highs near 90 midweek. Temporary relief from heat came with storms across the state, with a new 1949 state heat record of 96 at Sioux City, Cartrall and Inwood. The bureau predicts continued warmth with only brief showers and some damage from the storm including downed tree limbs and power outages in Des Moines.

Coplon Denies Espionage in Extended Testimony

Judith Coplon ended a lengthy denial of espionage activity and was handed to federal prosecutors for cross examination. After about 12 hours on the stand under Archibald Palmer, the defense lawyer declared the witness ready for Kelley. Coplon testified she never passed secrets to Russian engineer Valentine Gubitchev and he never asked her to.

Parents Identify Body of Clarence Lee

The parents of Clarence Lee 42 Council Bluffs trailer camp resident identified a body found Sunday in the Missouri river as their son. Lee fell from the coast guard cutter Goldenrod while it was fixed up here last week. Identification was made by Mr and Mrs William Lee of Hurley S D the parents. Lee is survived by four daughters and two sons all of Blencoe Services will be held Thursday at Hurley.

Janice Hansel sel ten died at home in Edgewood after three year battle with leukemia. She spent much time hospitalized and since Easter had been at home. Edgewood residents sent toy balloons to brighten her last day.
