Big Four Reach Agreement on Austrian Pact

The Big Four foreign ministers after a Paris meeting announced no full accord on German unity but did agree in principle on an Austrian independence treaty. They plan to reconvene Monday night to issue a final communique and resume talks in September at the UN. Lower level talks on Berlin will continue, with Austria’s frontiers held at Jan 1, 1998 and Austria to pay 130 million dollars to the Soviet Union in convertible currency.

Dividend Planned for World War II Veterans Policies

Washington VA chief Carl R Gray Jr announced a 2.8 billion dollar special dividend for national service life insurance policies. About 16 million WWII veterans could receive roughly 175 dollars each, with checks starting in January 1950 and most payments completed by mid year. Eligibility covers those who held policies at least three months, with beneficiaries for deceased holders. Applications will be available in August at post offices and VA offices, but retirees are asked not to write yet to avoid delays.
