Flood waters in the Shenandoah Potomac valley of West Virginia and Virginia killed at least five people and left more than twenty missing. Bodies recovered include Mrs Margaret Frances Bricker near Bridgewater and Cpl A M Hurst of Petersburg. other missing include a Petersburg family and nine more statewide. Petersburg suffered extensive damage with hundreds evacuated, homes and buildings destroyed or damaged, and livestock losses. Rescue crews also saved 80 4 H clubbers stranded below Staunton Vallley as rains ceased.
