LeCompte Addresses Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars

Mine Workers Back to Pits on Monday

FITTSBURGH The UMW ordered 480,000 miners back to work Monday per John L. Lewis telegram to end the week long walkout. Lewis, amid new contract talks, said the strike would stabilize the industry. The contract expires June 30 and workers will take a paid week off after five days worked. Each miner receives 100 dollars on June 25 for annual vacation.

Big DAV Parade in Council Bluffs Friday Evening

Council Bluffs will host one of its biggest parades Friday evening as 40 units and four bands move down Broadway in a DAV convention spectacle. The route runs from Benton and Broadway west to Eighth, south to First Ave, east to Pearl, south to Willow, west to Sixth, and north to First. Memorial services follow at Bayliss Park at 7 15 p m. A firing squad from local post joins Waterloo's 16 men. Delegates include Mayor Wilcomen and state officers. Gen J M Wainwright praised. Natalie attendees expect his visit. over 200 delegates registered by Friday noon.

Lenox Bedford Men Object to Burlington Branch Change

The Iowa State commerce commission met in Creston to hear objections from Lenox and Bedford shippers and businessmen to Burlington railroad plans. The proposal would cut freight service on the Creston Amazonia branch by moving to triweekly runs instead of daily service except Sundays.

Jim O. Henry of Carson was elected state president of the county supervisors group, and Paul Mahoney of 515 East Pierce Street was named state president of the county engineers section at Des Moines. Thunderstorms Forecast as Heat Eases Across State

The low 90s gave way to cooler readings with a Friday night storm forecast and winds. Temperatures may dip to around 60 Saturday amid partly cloudy skies and possible showers with highs in the upper 70s. Thursday’s high reached 86 and Friday’s low 66, while Sioux City reported 91 for the state high and 59 at Amex and Town City with no precipitation reported.

Community Chest Budget Raises to 5317 in 1950 Plan

The Community Chest increases the 1950 budget to 531,173 from 1949 by 2,140 to fund three agencies Boy Scouts Salvation Army and Railroad YMCA. Additional staff needs include a field man for Boy Scouts a full time physical director for the YMCA and extra case work funds for the Salvation Army. The Girl Scouts receive 200 more for painting the Little House in Prospect Park. The board approved the budget and accepted Rev. Loren Works resignation. Campaign dates will be announced after plans are set.

Big Four Stretch Deadlines for New Accords

Paris report says foreign ministers extended their unofficial deadline to tackle the Austrian independence treaty and a German trade pact. After 11th hour sessions they recessed to Sunday with another meeting set for Monday. A near agreement on the German issue is noted, but east west differences remain central. The Berne rail strike clouds talks, and even with Austrian accord the pact could take months to draft and may not be ready for signature until fall in New York. Russia’s backing of Tito could shift if the Austrian treaty is signed.

Homeless man given 90 day sentence in Chester

John Met Cafferty, 46, arrested as a vagrant in Chester. He claimed two homes and gave 714 McKelvie street as his address. Magistrate R. Robinson Lowry pressed for specifics and accepted the address as his residence. Cafferty was sentenced to 90 days for vagrancy.

Beardsley seeks state conciliation for bricklayers strike

Des Moines governor William S Beardsley proposed a voluntary state labor conciliation service within existing laws to settle the Des Moines bricklayers wage dispute. He urged Master Builders and the AFL Bricklayers union to agree on a conciliator to prevent strikes and urged public spirited citizens to serve as mediators.

Resignations Sought by Katelman Over Alderman and Chief

Alderman at large Joseph B Katelman urged the resignation of Police Chief Frank E Altrock and First Ward Alder man Clarence Meldrum. He directed his plea to Major George B Sparks, saying if the chief ordered action he should resign and if Meldrum was in that condition he should resign. He cited reports that Altrock had told officers to pick Meldrum up if he got in his car. Capt. Montgomery said Meldrum was not picked at the chief’s request and the original report of an arrest on the chief’s orders was corrected.

Alderman Meldrum faces drunken driving charge

Preliminary information filed Friday in municipal court accuses First Ward Alderman Clarence B. Meldrum 41 of drunken driving. Local attorney Thomas Tacy represents Meldrum who likely will waive preliminary hearing and be bound to the grand jury. Arrainment set for 10 a.m. Saturday. $500 bond remains as appearance bond. Meldrum vows to fight the charge. Police Capt. Ben Montgomery signed the information. County Attorney Don Jackson defended not signing and explained procedures.

No Trace Found for Missing Clarence Lee in Missouri River

No trace had been found Friday of Clarence Lee of Council Bluffs who fell from a government boat in the Missouri river and is believed drowned. Lee lived at 2501 Fourth Avenue, and was not a member of the boat crew.
