Wealthy widow and guests poisoned coffee at Birchwood home

A group including Mrs Nancy Birch, Mrs Laura Froman, her daughter, and several others were poisoned by coffee laced with a poisonous drug. Mrs Froman and Mrs Birch are not expected to live while the others are expected to survive. Rachael Davis, a colored servant, and two Owensboro guests are involved. The motive appears to be wholesale murder.

A rally tragedy unfolds as an engineer dies after disregarding a diver warning sign in a misguided attempt to outrun danger. Investigators say his belief the diver would turn white at the last moment led to the fatal decision.

Grounds to be dedicated for Louisiana Purchase Exposition

Announcement says the Louisiana Purchase Exposition grounds and buildings will be dedicated on April 20 by the U S president with an address by Grover Cleveland. Major General Henry C. Corbin will lead a large military pageant including regular troops and national guards in the 720 by 525 foot Palace of the Liberal Arts seating 50 000. A grand evening fireworks display will follow.

Mutinous Sailors Allegedly Kill Captain Sailors Fire Ship

Four sailors arrested in Liverpool charged with mutiny aboard the Carque Feronica from Biloxi to Montevideo in 1902. They allegedly murdered the captain and six crew, scuttled the barque, set it afire, and escaped with a negro cook kept as servant until he alerted police. The crew deny the wreck occurred.

State Engineer Estimates Cost of Ship Canal at 78 340 Per Mile

State Engineer C E Perkins of Akron reports to the state board on enlarging the Ohio canal from Cleveland to the Muskingum to 70 by 7 feet, adding locks and reservoirs. The estimate totals about 12.3 million dollars with an average cost per mile of 78 340, including earthwork paving dams and feeder work.
